A great new find in Bedfordview: Dear Chef

When Jodene Shaer announced on her Facebook profile that she had a discount voucher from Zomato to give away, I didn’t hesitate – I quickly put up my hand and asked for it. Had I checked where the restaurant was, I probably wouldn’t have entered the giveaway – Bedfordview isn’t in my area. However, I’m glad that I didn’t look where it was as I’m so glad that I went to Dear Chef.

Dear Chef is located on Van Buuren Road in Bedfordview , so it’s not that inaccessible for people coming from the other side of town. Predominantly a lunch venue, it’s situated in the Key West Shopping Centre and is very peaceful.

The chef, at Dear Chef, favours deconstructed dishes on his menu and turns old classics on their heads. A big risk as if the experiment goes wrong it could go horribly wrong. But in this case,  the experiment went very right.

My husband had Dear Chef’s take on the Beef Wellington. Instead of the beef being wrapped completely  in pastry, the beef – which was done to perfection – was served on a pastry bed topped with a gorgonzola sauce. He is still raving about it!

I had Dear Chef’s deconstructed BLT salad. This was made up of all the ingredients that you would usually find in a BLT sandwich with a couple of other surprises such as avocado,  olives and freshly cut corn. The mayonnaise-type dressing finished the dish off beautifully, bringing all the elements together.

We shared a piece of kataifi, a traditional Greek dessert. It had such delicate flavours and wasn’t overpowering sweet.

For our meal  – which included a bottle of wine and four coffees – we paid just over R400.

We will definitely be back at Dear Chef – we were  thoroughly impressed with this establishment and will recommend it to our friends.
