Feel like a failure? Stop it! Develop some S.O.U.L…

One thing I loathe and detest about Unisa is that they release exam results in the evening. Last semester, Unisa consistently released results between 7.30 and 8pm in the evening. Unfortunately, the university wasn’t as nice this semester and released results in the early hours of the morning so you could get a wonderful – or very nasty  – surprise as soon as you opened your eyes. I received one such nasty surprise a couple of mornings ago when I woke up to the news that I had failed a subject.

So what did I do?

I figured that I had two options. One: I could wallow in self pity, berating myself for not having worked hard enough. Or I could decide to put this experience behind me and use it as a learning curve, showing me what I shouldn’t do the next time.

I chose the latter course of action. I decided to develop some S.O.U.L

Failure is an opportunity to learn

I read somewhere that failure shouldn’t be thought of in a negative light. It should  be seen as an opportunity to learn how to do that thing differently next time so that you will succeed. (If you’re interested, earlier this year I wrote a post on how learning can be very hard. Read it here.)

Why do you need to develop some S.O.U.L?

Your soul is the embodiment of your being. It directs how you make emotional decisions, how you feel and what your gut reactions are. It is the very essence of your being. Failure and fear of failure are emotions that touch the very depths of your being – where your souls resides. Thus to face failure – or the fear of failure – successfully you need to strengthen your soul:

S – Second

Many, many, many times when we do something we don’t get it right first time. Don’t think about this as a failure, that you’ve done something wrong. Rather, if you don’t get something right the first time look at what you can do differently in order to ensure that you’re successful the next time round. Look at the first time as a practice round. Tell yourself that you’ll nail it the second time .

O – Opportunity for

There are opportunities all around us. They are exciting and bring a lot new and unexplored possibilities. They are exciting and can open up a whole new world for you. So don’t let yourself get discouraged by failure – who knows what opportunities it will open up for you if you face what you fear?

U – Unimaginable

The opportunities that having to do something again because you didn’t get it right the first time will be beyond your wildest dreams. So take a chance and leap. You never know what will come your way!

L – Learning

Learning is what makes life special and rewarding. Unless you learn you stay stagnant and never grow and develop. But beware: learning is tough and can hurt. Don’t give up. It will be worth it in the end.
